Recently I bought a beautiful painting, which I ascribe to Paul Verona (see photo). He painted a series of oriental scenes with the same signature. But there are also a lot of his paintings where the signature is different. Someone hinted to me that my painting might be by a man called Vito Perona, but I can hardly find information on him. If the signature is by Paul Verona, why did he change it? Any information welcome. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your replies. Confusing indeed. I tend to go along with the Lucien Perona suggestion. It is a pity that his paintings are valued less than the Paul Verona ones.......

On other site he is called Lucien Perona. It is the same signature. Very confusing.

This link provides good evidence that your painting is in fact by a Vito Perona:

Official exhibition, same signature.

Paintings with the same signature have probably been mis-attributed to Paul Verona because he also painted some Mid-Eastern motifs. But in a less loose painting style, not this "running impasto".
