there are better pics from the ebay listing, that bought it from and the number is , i tried to down load the pics ,but no luck.

hello and thanks for looking. I just bought this and there was a small description from the seller who said it could be a 19 century or 18 century and i was hoping to narrow it down.I also wanted know if anyone has seen this subject and if it were a copy by a student. There is no visable signature, but it is awful dirty and could use a professional cleaning, are should i have that done ?.I know the shaw and bonnet would be a lot brighter if that could be done.there might be a signature ,in the real dark area.Could someone tell me if the frame ,looks like it went with the inner frame?.
16 in high x 14 in wide with out frame
oil on canvas p.s canvas is glued to the inner frame

Shawn,
Your painting seems to be from the same era as the frame. The frame has thin strips of wood at a diagonal, with other strips coming from the corners to the diagonal pieces. This style is one I have noticed on some of my frames which, indicated by the known artists, were made between the late 18th century up until the mid-19th century.
If I look at the detail and fineness of the painting (with a loop), and see that a painting has been finely painted, I will risk cleaning. Sometimes when you clean a painting, you find that the quality of the painting lacks detail, and you might be uncovering a naive or weak painting.
I believe that a professional cleaning would probably expose a signature. I would be surprised if a signature did not exist. The scratch through the center of the painting can be quite easily filled once the painting is cleaned.
If you haven't invested too much money, you might be able to end up with a very charming little painting. It is a very nice subject.
This is just my opinion. I hope that this helps a bit.
Jimmy

Thanks for responding jimmy and i will go head and have it professionally cleaned .I thought i had seen something at the bottom left ,but as i looked more and more, i think my eyes were playing tricks on me.It appears who ever painted this, had a hard time with the hands and that is the only thing i would have liked painted better.

Hello too all and thx for looking .I finally put the painting under a black light and found under image of a face on the right side of the face(eye area) ,which looks like a small face .There's also a canvas that seems to be glued on to the main canvas and I'm not familiar with this,is this common? Still no date or signature and there's also changes in the painting under the black light. The strecher has no oxidation, something I should have mentioned ..before.before .
