I tried some days ago, but without luck.

The first letter must be a capital K.

I tend to think that the following two vertical lines are one capital letter as well, possibly H.

Then it could be u n. The curvature of the lines points in that direction.
The wiggly vertical line could be a small L, if the surface made the brush wiggle - and then maybe small LT.

But your new photo reveals a dot before the last two characters.

A hint to the origin might help.

Regards,
Vietato

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to look and trying to work it out.

I should have put a photo up of the reverse of the painting.

I am not a sure as to the origin of the work but if i was to hazard a guess i would think French.

The writinG on the back says"MANY HAPPY RETURNS" and dated 40.On looking closley at the back there are some pencil inscriptions which i am going to take the time and try and decipher.

The painting is older than the date on the back of the painting it is a mahogany chamfered panel probably late 19th century

Thanks again for your help

Charles

Hi
thought I would try this painting one last time.
I think the signature could have been added when the painting was dry . I think the 3rd and 4th letters could be A and U with the first K

It looks like, "K Hunter". Just a thought.

That's a good observation, Jimmy. K Hunter fits the signature very well.
Unfortunately an artist with that name and subject matter doesn't just pop up.
