Hello, this is a mid 20th c. oil on thin wood panel. I thought that it depicted Venice, but looking more intently the boats appear to be more like barges.

There was a remnant of a post WWII Spanish stamp verso, no other info. It is signed lower right, "A. ???????????" Can anyone help with the signature?

Images in the link:

Thanks - Brooks

Hello. The signature should be "A. Colombo" ; unfortunately there are many painters named Colombo having the first name that starts with A.

Hi angelo, thank you for your help. It does appear to read at least "A. Colomb..". The last letters are too indistinct. I have tried Colombo, but find no other paintings by this artist.

Regards - Brooks

Hi Brooks.
Try here : https://www.artprice.com/artists/search?exact_match=1&keyword=colombo
or better here : http://www.arcadja.com/auctions/it/ricerca-autore/?searchArtistsInput=colombo

Hi Angelo, I am subscribed to Artprice, but there were so many results the artist did not show up. The other site gave better results. "Aldo Colombo" or his full name on Artprice "Aldo detto da Cortiana COLOMBO (1908-?)", has works that are very close in style, also there are some views of Venice.

However he appears to have signed his works "A De Cortiana". Unfortunately, I admit to a complete ignorance regarding the structure of Italian names and titles. Would this artist ever have signed his name "A. Colombo"?

Hi Brooks.

I saw that usually Aldo Colombo signed the paintings "A. Colombo" (for example http://www.sesarts.com/prodotto.php?id=1&auction=43&cat=46&item=3253) .
To be sincere , there is also an artist called "A. Colombo" in auction , but I don't know if he could be the right one : https://bidtoart.com/en/find-artist/a-colombo/177872

Hi angelo,

http://www.sesarts.com/prodotto.php?id=1&auction=43&cat=46&item=3253

In the link you provided the signature reads "A Da Cortiana"? Is this the right link?

Unfortunate the images of paintings listed by A. Colombo are too small to discern.

However, this one by Aldo Colombo appears to by signed "A Colombo".!

Hi Brooks

You're right ! In the link in the previous post the signature is "A. De Cortiana".
He uses both signatures.
As I told in my previous post , there are many possibilities for paintings signed "A. Colombo".
To make an extensive and "wide" research on google , I suggest you to put in the search field "a. colombo" "auction" and you will find a lot of possibilities. Unfortunately with new privacy european rules , you can see only few images with the previous search key. You have to check every single result on google going to the related link.
