French painter? No, Dutch painter : Willem Jilts Pol (1905 Leek/Groningen - 1988). He sometimes signed 'Pol', but here fully 'WimJiltsPol'. He lived and worked in Paris until 1930, then in Wassenaar (Netherlands). Before the WWII he married Poppet John, daughter of world-famous Augustus John (pivotal figure in "Bohemian" culture and fashion), and the couple settled in Indonesia, where in 1940 their daughter Talitha was born. With the Japanese entering Java, the artist found himself in one war prison camp and his wife and daughter in another. After the war he and his wife went their separate ways. He went back to Europe, traveled a lot and produced these popular color-full girls you probably call 'kitschig'. Daughter Talitha became a cult figure, marrying a Getty heir and killing herself with drugs...
