I’m trying to identify the artist of this painting which we purchased at auction in Australia (Melbourne) towards the end of last year.
No signature is apparent, but it is inscribed "Hartie" on the frame below the image. There is another partly legible inscription verso which reads "Harriette B Mc.…? 1885", along with some other illegible script.
The image is 24.5 x 19.5 cm.
If anyone is able to shed any light it would be greatly appreciated.
Hartie is quite surely the sitter and her full name on the back to me looks like Harriette B. Mc Quaid or Mc Quinn. There appears to be no usefull reference to the artist. In such cases I give up trying to identify him/her, unless knowledgeable people agree with me that it is an absolute masterpiece. Quod non.
We thought it was possibly an Australian work dating from the Colonial period when there was a dearth in artists of quality. They may be of limited interest internationally, but are of local importance in the context of providing a visual record of Australia's formative years.
