For many years I consulted, often several times daily, the extensive list of artists' names called Commanducci after the Ottocento expert Agostino Mario Comanducci (1891-1940). It was a secret I shared here several times, as it combined extremely handy features with simplicity and comprehensiveness. Now it is off the air. Had it been a paysite, I would gladly have subscribed as I do Artprice. But it wasn't, it was free and not widely known. What a pity it is no longer available.

What do you all use as first tool to identify an artist?

Artprice for similarity search and findartinfo for asterisk search (if finally Artprice would offer this, I would pay double fee). Dictionary of monograms book I and II for monogram identification.

Comanducci seems to have lost connection to MS SQL database. Lets hope its just a temporary problem.

Cyril's query reminded me that size often matters. If an artist is known to have used a certain format canvas or paper sheet, it may become an important clue. And vice versa. Artprice sports a usefull tool.

Even without an Artprice subscription you can sort all oils, watercolours/drawings or prints of an artist by SIZE as done here from large to small for the Landseer drawing:

and find out if the artist has used your particular format more often.

Auctioneers use this tool on a daily basis and museum people for lack of alternative use it too.
