For many years I consulted, often several times daily, the extensive list of artists' names called Commanducci after the Ottocento expert Agostino Mario Comanducci (1891-1940). It was a secret I shared here several times, as it combined extremely handy features with simplicity and comprehensiveness. Now it is off the air. Had it been a paysite, I would gladly have subscribed as I do Artprice. But it wasn't, it was free and not widely known. What a pity it is no longer available.
What do you all use as first tool to identify an artist?
Cyril's query reminded me that size often matters. If an artist is known to have used a certain format canvas or paper sheet, it may become an important clue. And vice versa. Artprice sports a usefull tool.
Even without an Artprice subscription you can sort all oils, watercolours/drawings or prints of an artist by SIZE as done here from large to small for the Landseer drawing:
