Hello,

I'm trying to identify the artist of two German Expressionist woodcut prints.

The street scene is 15 inches by 9 inches and is dated 1929

The figures are 13 inches by 7 inches and is dated 1930.

Any help is appreciated.

The writing is in Sütterlinschrift, which takes some experience to read. Some of our German members will be able to read it, so hopefully they can find out the artist name.

I think the street scene from 1929 is titled "Die Gaffe" (the faux pas/slip/mistake), and the other, from 1930, is titled "Quartetto".

I think the artist name starts with V and ends with either LD or LO. Could be "Vuld", but that doesn't look like a real German name.

I'm attaching a picture with the letters of Sütterlin.

Regards,
Vietato

Vietato, thank you for the very helpful information.

Working from your suggestions, I have determined the artist to be Max Unold (1885 - 1964). I found other woodcuts with matching signatures.

I had tried various internet searches without result, then decided to try the old fashioned way. I looked at the index of the book German Expressionists Prints and Drawings, and as luck would have it Unold was very close to the V's.

Thanks again,

Great that you found the artist!

Max Unold probably did not write the standard Sütterlin, because this doesn't have a diacritical mark over the O - only above I and U.

Regards,
Vietato

Thank you for the further information.

Are those prostitutes in the street scene? There are figures standing in the doorways and windows.
