please take a look at this whimsical watercolor painting that reminds me of Pop Art style. Came from UK art dealer but somehow I feel like this is US artist (though I may be wrong, of course).

Clearly titled "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" in the left corner and it is monogrammed SJA (1967) in the right corner. I have run SJA through monogram database on this website but sadly got ZERO results. I was wondering if somebody knows who this artist was please ...???

Done on paper, full size is about 10 x 8 inches, the art sight is only 6 x 6 inches.

Thank you for the help in advance. This forum helped me a lot in the past to identify many artists I had questions about and hopefully this mystery will be solved as well.

Hello Cyril,
I think this is by an amateur. Amateur is not equivalent to bad, but often to a lack of routine, and then the brush will sometimes do strokes that are less fortunate, and which can’t be covered up in a medium like this.

I see “less fortunate strokes” in the brown “wall” beneath the black roof, and in the red lines radiating from the person’s left hand. Also the right arm and the yellow “horn” challenges my eye.

Strictly speaking, SJA is not a monogram, but initials.
Your question is a good opportunity to draw attention to a couple of other ressources for monogram or initials searches:

But your SJA is not in either of them.

I recommend the Art forum at BidtoArt.com

Dear Vietato,

thank you very much for your comments on the watercolor. I always enjoy your comments (including other art pieces on this forum) as I know they come from an art expert and a good/positive critique is always a plus as an individual can learn from it. Now that I look at this watercolor through "your eyes" I think I can agree that the wall does look unfinished so to speak ...

Once again, thank you for quick response. It helps a lot!
