Anyone have any insight on this floral still life as per date and potentially artist? There is no apparent signature or other identifying marking.

Kevin,
You just might have to have the painting cleaned, to bring out a signature, and, certainly, some bright colors. It's very difficult to see how good or bad the artist is, by the dark photos. I've had that difficulty in the past presenting a really dark painting.

I restore paintings, if I know they aren't masterpieces. It is so fun to see an old painting come alive with cleaning. You have to decide to have it cleaned, or not. You can destroy it, with over cleaning. It's always fun to imagine the artist and time period. If it weren't so dark, it would be a little easier to diagnose it. I would have to see it, up close. I wish you well, with it. If you can find a signature (or letters), send another photo. Also, if you have photos of the reverse, that might be helpful to us on the forum.

Best regards,

Jimmy N

Thanks Jimmy. It could certainly use a cleaning. The varnish is quite thick. Here is an image of the verso.

Hi, Kevin,

There has to be a signature, somewhere. Maybe even initials. I love painting like this one. I didn't see the cupid, in your other photos.

A signature might be at the base of the little cupid. Take a look.

The painting is probably dark, due to darkening of the varnish on the surface. I know you'd be amazed, if you saw it without the aged varnish. If you lived close to Phoenix, I'd love to look closer at it. It might not be a masterpiece, but it is old, probably from the 1880s to the 1890s.

If you find initials, or a signature, let the Forum know.

Regards,
Jimmy N
