I have just unearthed this painting from the depth of my attic last weekend.
Impasto oil on canvas painting measures 22 x 18 inches for the canvas size (UK manufacturer stamp) and then comes to 26 x 22 inches when framed (but frame is not original to the painting). I acquired this painting a number of years ago from UK private collection. The previous owner said he picked it up from UK local auction where it was listed as art work by Sidney Yates Johnson (listed UK artist). I bought the painting regardless of artist's name, I just loved this impasto landscape ...... but now that I look at it more and more I have my doubts: the more I look at it the less I think it is by Sidney Yates Johnson (at least after what I saw browsing a good number of HIS paintings on Internet). None of them seemed to have such impasto and expressionist style that this semi-abstract painting was created with. It does look old (probably not antique) and it was already dirty when I bought it, however I do not see a signature or a date.
Here comes the question: can anyone think this can still be Sidney Johnson...?
or maybe it will remind you of another artist who could have worked in the same style (I think the painting dates to probably 1930s maybe 1940s) that comes to your mind.
