I bought this painting on ebay. Signed and dated bottom right. Oil on Board, 32 x 27 cm. W.G. Richardson 1829 But unfortunately I can't find any information about the painter. Can anyone help me? The image is very poorly varnished and shines the varnish sticks a little more, full of hair or cotton fiber, .... must be re-varnished. I love this painting, I want to know everything about it.
The search for this maker will probably be in vain, unless you find him in some genealogical archive. He was not an academically educated artist, as the poor rendering of hands and gowns show. He may have sold such humorous paintings to pubs and the like, where the clientele was not too demanding as to artistic quality. Such painters are rarely documented.
