Hello,
This is a recently acquired oil on board. The painting measures 17" (43cm) by 21" (53cm). It seems to be quite well done and reasonable old. There is a signature, but it is very faint and indiscernible to me. I tried to enhance it in photoshop, but am still at a loss. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I am not sure at all, but maybe it could be Henry Hanke (Australian, 1901-1989).

Here are a lot of examples to look at:
https://www.invaluable.com/catalog/searchLots.cfm?scp=m&artistref=tni28q1yhu&ad=DESC&shw=50&ord=2&alf=1&issc=1&row=1

The signature examples I have been able to see are all HANKE in block letters of even height, so it is probably not by him.

I would have helped if you had shown the whole picture instead of only half of it!

Regards,
Vietato

Hello Vietato,
Thank you very much for that suggestion. I will look into it. I was also seeing it as Ha--e. Interestingly, the "a" looks like it has a deliberate dot over it, which I couldn't quite figure out.

Also, it looks strange in the photo having cut off the frame on the right, but that is the entire composition. The frame is only a few millimeters away from the edge of the photo.
Thank you again, and as always I value your input.

Best regards

Okay, I thought the motif had been cut off in the photo because size is usually given with height before width in the art business.

The letter after the H (if it is an H) looks like which is found in the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish alphabets. I looked for possible names starting with H but couldn't find any.

Regards,
Vietato

Hello.

The signature is compliant also with ****e Wladyslaw.

http://www.altekunst-vienna.com/frontend/scripts/index.php?groupId=0&productId=1114&setMainAreaTemplatePath=mainarea_productdetail.html&query=&PHPSESSID=fb1147c02f4c05850f2469c95877fbee

And also the style would seem to be not too far from this one.

Angelo

P.S. I don't know for which reason , the post changes the name W.A.N.K.I.E. into ****e

Hi Vietato and Angelo,

Vietato, thank you again. I appreciate you looking into the other possibilities. I've never known the standard format for listing measurements in art, but I am happy to have learned it now now and will remember to list height and then width in the future.

Angelo, thank you very much for your time and suggestion. Wow, that is a close signature. Probably the closest I've seen yet. I will look more into the artist. Also, it is very funny that the algorithm picks up the name W.a.n.k.i.e. as a profanity. Makes it difficult to discuss the artist.

Best regards
