Hi everyone. When I was young my grandmother had this painting hung in her living room, but it frightened me when I would visit so she put it away. As fate would have it, when she passed away it found its way into my posession. It has been in storage, but I would like to display it. It is quite large as seen in the pictures.
The only real information I have on it is that it is in a frame labled "Anco Bilt" "Glendale N.Y." The number 50303 is written in large print on the back. It appears to be signed HANK BOS, but I am not sure on that either.
It appears to be an oil painting with faces almost carved into it.
Any help on identifying this artist would be great! As you can probably tell I know very little about art, but I do enjoy it!

It is scary. I'll give you that. You can look up the artist at your local library to see if he's listed. I would doubt it, but it 's worth a try. Might be an outsider artist. Did you google this person? If he's listed he should turn up.

Yeah, I googled him. A few years ago I also contacted www.hankbos.com, but it is not the same artist.
Also, I am almost positive my grandmother had this painting before she moved here from Canada, so my tiny library would doubtfully know anything.
Thanks for your help!

How about "HANS BOS" or HANS H.BOS. There is a vertical stroke in the B, this should have a meaning too, perhaps an "H". If the artist chose painting material from the US, I would assume it is an artist from your side of the atlantic. Try the american folk art museum in New York. regards kd

Did you ever find Hans Bos? We have the same story - a painting that scared us all growing up - in the same style - see attached. We called it "God". I have that in my office; but have another one of his works that I'd like to sell.

Any Hank Bos would of course be of Dutch extraction and the national art historical bureau in The Hague does list a few dozen Bosses and some Henks (no Hank at all) but no Hendrik, Henk or what-have-you that went across the pond. We did have a Henk Bos who was very succesfull in the US with still lives, but he never went there. So I think you can rule out any Dutch born Hank Bos.
