Question for Tim about the ESK mark : an unknow mark of Edward Sherard Kennedy?
A photo of the back please charley.
Edit : Not so unknown, the mark ESK for Edward Sherrard Kennedy is quoted by Lugt in a supplement to his Collector's mark (ESK perfored through the sheet)
Proof here (item number 7)

Hi,

Saintluc thanks for the information. On the information that you have given me i went to the National Portrait Website where it gives the information on Edward Sherard Kennedy. It states that he had accounts with with Roberson, who i think where art suppliers. The canvas has the stamp of John Bryce Smith 117 Hampstead Road, London NW who also had an account with Roberson.Do you think the ESK Stamp on the reverse could be for Edward Sherard Kennedy. It seems to make sense or am i jumping the gun.I have seen some of his works but not enough to come to a conclusion.

Thanks for the info

I know that E.S.K paper is a brand of paper which I assume came from the Esk paper mill.

http://forum.findartinfo.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3785&SearchTerms=ESK

I've certainly had a number of watercolours on E.S.K paper. This canvas stamp however I think has nothing to do with E.S.K paper. The painting must date between 1883-1921 as the Bryce Smith stamp is before they turned into a Ltd company. Interestingly the NPG source states a Rowney made canvas with E.S.K which they attribute as being Edward Sherard Kennedy's of 1880 - this seems to rule out the possibility of it being a manufacturers stamp. So you would think it was by Kennedy, however the flower still life at Waddington's puts the cat amongst the pigeons - I would say this portrait and that Dutch inspired still life are by completely different artists - which begs the question did the NPG or (Lugt even) make a mistake referring to that stamp as Kennedy's. Unfortunately we don't have either image for reference. Other options are an exhibition stencil, auction room stencil or even perhaps some scheme for canvas quality control! I will do some research and see what comes up - I like this portrait, and would love to see it cleaned - there are some quality touches.

Who said this painting is BY Kennedy? I do know the National Portrait Gallery section and I only quoted these links thinking to the canvas or stretcher manufacturer. Please read again this question for Tim I posted before charley send the photo of the back stamp.
About the "cat" I was able- Thank you Tim- to stated by my own on the fact that these flowers are not by the hand encensed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Hi,

It states in the NPG website that his stencilled canvas mark appears in association with a mark of George Rowney on a painting of c.1888. It also sates that in the second link that saintluc lot 84.It states that he had accounts with with Roberson, who i think where art suppliers. The canvas has the stamp of John Bryce Smith 117 Hampstead Road, London NW who also had an account with Roberson.Do you think the ESK Stamp on the reverse of my painting could be for Edward Sherard Kennedy , or is it just a coincidence.

Thanks c

Right I've sussed it out. On the basis of this painting:

http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/WService=wslive_pub/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=eur&screen=lotdetailsNoFlash&iSaleItemNo=4637446&iSaleNo=17912&iSaleSectionNo=1

I would say that your painting is by Edward Sherard Kennedy. Lot 84 however in the other sale I really don't think is by Kennedy (he may have merely owned that painting). You see we needed an autograph original to confirm the attribution as the other references were tenuous.
