Advanced search still having problems......... Will only bring up 1st of many pages.

actually there is no bug. The search algorithm did change though and the description is now outdated and wrong. I have reported some weeks ago that the search is now way faster than before, so the change is mainly a good thing.

I take the example of saintluc:

- sla*n leads to all names starting with Sla and ending with N

- sla*n* leads to all names starting with Sla with n inside or ending

- *sla*n* leads to all 25 pages

I like it, even if it is a bug (or a feature)!

besides, the title search is still using the old algorithm, but I am not using it too often anyway.

yes, it worked at least on my computer, and I dont think its a browser problem:

Slas Claesson

Slas Stig Claesson

Slava Mogutin

Slaví#269;ek Jan

Slavko Tomerlin

Slawomir Toman

"Charles B Slackman" is a result that does NOT start with Sla but with Cha. I know some weeks ago the search algorithm was different. I am pretty sure the admins changed the routine, maybe to increase the performance. I wished the admins would write a statement!
"Charles B Slackman" can problably be found if you search with *sla*n.

Same with pic*so:

results are only names that directly start with Pic! So NOT "Pablo Ruiz Picasso" as THIS result starts with Pab! I hope it is clear now. Thats the way the search algorithm works. I didnt design it :-)

Absolutely right. You have to change the style of your search input and have to use much more * now.

quote:
And you don´t find an artist if you don´t know his first name.
Not quite true. For example, use *picasso and you ll find all Picasso entries even if you dont know his prename.

quote:
And you can´t find "Slaví?ek Jan", even if you know both names, because it is written with the familyname first.
Unfortunately true. To be on the safe side we have to start with a more common search like *Slaví?ek*

I suppose Mu*er results is just 1 single page, ending with Murray Walker and Murrell Butler. So just the results starting with Mu and ending with er.

The listing "48 pages" is indeed very strange and should be changed. Till then we have to live with it.

All 48 pages are accessible only if you search with *Mu*er*.

Adrian

yes, I ve noticed that too and it was mindbending and not logic. My theory: If you do a search without asterisks (*), the algorithm acts differently. At last, searching Muller and *Muller* lead to the same results.

...to all above above also God forbid you writing a name with a capital letter or copy paste it as such from elsewhere. The new search engine is nowhere near as useful as the old one used to be, so I don´t really care how fast it became. :(

Could that somehow be related to the browser you are using or your security software, wasbach? When I type *anse* I get an endless list of Jansen, Hansen and Nansens... I use this site mainly for this purpose as it is the only one I know that allows this search. Not even artprice has this feature.

Is it only my problem?

Where is for example "Charles B Slackman (1934-) United States of America"?

And the 723 other results?

And why are your result only show artists with the first name beginning with "Sla" and second name ending with "n"?

That´s a part of the problem.

And what is this:

http://www.findartinfo.com/english/Artists/Result?artistName=Pic *so

38 hammerprices, when you ask with pic*so for Picasso??

Adrian, all 48 pages are accessible to me when I enter Mu*er, as they were yesterday when wasbach reported the problem. Though aware that it did indeed not make sense and only *mu*er* ought to yield these 1420 results, I have always used the advanced search that way, as it is very usefull.

Why try "p+casso"? The right search goes *p*casso* which turns out a whole lot of Picasso´s! Even a guy called Efter Picasso [:D], probably a Danish illegal child of Pablo´s.

The way the old search worked: you were able to put in just the legible letters in (even without *´s) and it would give you all possible results. It doesn´t work like that anymore. :(

Fro example if I put in jo* *a*iit (or "jo a iit) I get no results. The artist I was checking on is John Saarniit.

thanks admins!

(although I liked this "bug" [:D])

I dont want to miss the occasion and report that there are many real bugs with "+" that should replace a single letter. To be honest it doesnt work at all. Just try "p+casso". Sorry to spoil the party [:I]

Things seem to be getting better, thank you.

Another glitch that remains is that a search wouldn´t give a positive result if you enter only the first and last names of an artist if that artist happens to have a middle name or even just an extra initial. It would have to be written exactly the way it is entered in the findartinfo´s database.

For example enter Walter Heath Williams and he is there, but if enter only Walter Williams he wouldn´t be among results.

Yes, it does work now! Thanks for a great job!

In case this is relevant: the Dutch Family Name Institute has a similar (same?) function styled for dummies, giving the choice between: 1) is exactly 2) begins with 3) ends with 4) contains 5) advanced. I use it a lot to decypher signatures.

Hmm... in a search for srqpeter´s artist Calini or Galini both symbols ´+´ and ´*´ produce the same results. The symbol ´+´ that should replace a single letter (as in +alini) gives 45 results, whereas it should not offer more results than the alphabet has letters, should it?

Hi Adrian,
We got feedback from Arb that searching by symbol "+" and "*" gives same results, so our IT made a small change in which the symbol "+" should be more limited in result.

Please let us know your opinion!

Thanks a lot!

Hi Vietato,

If you want to search more results you must use other symbols:

1. "*ohnson": You will see all names with several characters before "ohnson" (like A. Dewitt Johnson)

2. " *ohnson* : You will see all names with characters before and/or after ohnson ( like Dewitt Johnson Kat)

3. "+ohnson": You will see all names having only 1 character from a to z before ohnson

Hope it is clear now.

Thanks & Regards

Admin, one question.. maybe off topic.. do you know if findartinfo have plans on making something out of images. I mean, as it is now, it is ridicoulous. I want to see small images directly at the searchlist, as i can do at artprice. It is a stupid feature needing to click on the result to see picture. I´m sure you would gain a lot making this changes. For example, i had a Max Ernst litho that i needed to sort out some older results on.. it would take me an hour to making anything of it cause as it is now i need to click on every entire result .. another feature is that you should have the possibility to make searches within "max ernst".. as it is now you can only make searches on the entire database.

If you type

Gold you get 7 results

If you type *gold you get zero results

If you type *old you get zero results

If you browse to artists with the last name Gold there about 25

Please let me know which browser you used so we could check why it is so different.

I got the same results you got now. When I went back to the advanced search and used predicted words from the drop down to complete my search, I got the previous results. Then I noticed that the previous results all had a space after. I doubt that I could have made that error on all three but I´ll keep an eye on it.

Edit: I use the chrome browser

I´ve tested several different ways. It would be perfect if you solved the search within Max Ernst, and the images could be visibile directly at the searchresult.

Hi Admin,

The issue with middle names is back on again. You wouldn´t be able to find an artist just by his first and last names unless you know all of his middle names. For example James MacDonald search wouldn´t give you a result of James Edward Hervey MacDonald. I know you can make the search as James* MacDonald but than it effectively means that you have to remember putting that "*" in every search you make just in case an artist may have a middle name or an extra initial of some sort.

Hi Merray,

http://www.findartinfo.com/english/faq.html

It´s easy for you to find any name of artist If you don´t remember first, middle, last name. Please using some characters "*,?,+" to help you search exactly more than type only name.

Thanks & Regards,

Admin

So basically you are saying just what I wrote above: "it effectively means that you have to remember putting that "*" in every search you make just in case an artist may have a middle name or an extra initial of some sort."

OK, if you say so. It´s just wasn´t like that prior to the latest modifications and I find it highly inconvenient now. But you are the boss. :)

It´s rather very illogical: if everyone has to put a "*" in every search they make on your site, why not to make that to be a default way of the search engine?

I can be sure in very few artists that they don´t have any middle names or initials, so in 99.9% of the cases I would have to be typing that "*" in - just in case they have one or doing two searches: one without the "*" and one with. Does it make much sense to you?
